When is 24-hour blood pressure monitoring recommended?
- To determine false or true resistance to medications, especially in elderly or diabetic patients
- When symptoms of hypotension appear during antihypertensive treatment
- To rule out “white coat” hypertension
- In cases of episodic hypertension
- In high-risk patients (previous stroke, diabetes mellitus, post-revascularization period, aortic aneurysm)
- To assess the level of blood pressure control
24-hour blood pressure monitoring is also recommended for high-risk pregnant women (1st–3rd trimester):
- Pregnancy complicated by toxicosis
- History of previous pregnancy loss
- Obesity
- Pre-existing hypertension prior to pregnancy
- Kidney, heart, or vascular diseases
- Elevated office blood pressure readings
