Postpartum preeclampsia

Postpartum preeclampsia is a rare condition that causes a postpartum woman to have high blood pressure and excess protein in her urine. The condition develops soon after birth

Mostly, postpartum preeclampsia occurs within 48 hours after delivery However, postpartum preeclampsia sometimes develops as early as 6 weeks after delivery This is called late postpartum preeclampsia

Postpartum preeclampsia requires prompt treatment Left untreated, postpartum preeclampsia can lead to heart attacks and other serious complications

Preeclampsia is a similar condition that develops during pregnancy and typically resolves after the baby is born
The causes of postpartum preeclampsia or preeclampsia during pregnancy are unknown Pre-eclampsia during pregnancy typically resolves after delivery, while post-partum pre-eclampsia is likely to start late in pregnancy and appear after the baby is born.
Postpartum preeclampsia is not easy to recognize for the patient During pregnancy, the symptoms of postpartum preeclampsia do not naturally appear Also, a woman may not notice that something is bothering her because she has many other symptoms and concerns after giving birth

Signs and symptoms of postpartum preeclampsia are similar to those of preeclampsia during pregnancy. These are:

  • High blood pressure (140/90 or higher)
  • Excess protein in the urine – proteinuria
  • Severe headache
  • Visual changes such as temporary loss of vision, blurring, a Sh
  • Swelling of the face and limbs
  • Pain in the upper abdomen, mainly under the ribs, on the right
  • Feeling nauseous or vomiting
  • Reduced urination
  • Sudden weight gain, typically 0.9 kg per week
