Cholecystitis
Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ located on the right side of the abdomen, under the liver The gallbladder stores digestive fluid (bile) that is secreted into the small intestine
Most commonly, gallstones that block the flow of fluid cause cholecystitis. Accumulation of bile causes an inflammatory reaction Other causes of cholecystitis are bile duct pathologies and tumors
Untreated, cholecystitis can develop into serious, sometimes life-threatening complications, such as a ruptured gallbladder. Treatment sometimes involves removing the gallbladder
Cholecystitis is the result of the formation of an inflammatory condition in the gallbladder Gallbladder inflammation is caused by:
- Stones Mostly, cholecystitis is caused by stones Stones are formed when there is an imbalance of bile substances These substances are cholesterol and bile salts Gallstones can block the bile duct through which bile is supposed to leave the bladder, causing bile to build up and cause inflammation.
- Cancer The tumor may interfere with the normal emptying of the gallbladder, leading to bile build-up and cholecystitis.
- Bile duct blockage Deformation or scarring of the bile duct causes obstruction resulting in cholecystitis.
Possible signs and symptoms of cholecystitis include:
- Severe pain in the right upper abdomen
- Pain that radiates to the right shoulder or back
- Abdominal tenderness to the touch
- Feeling nauseous
- Vomiting
- Fever
